Home Remedies for Itchy Dogs

Last week on our Instagram account, I posted a photo of Norman and asked if anyone had any DIY home remedies for itchy dogs. As you probably know, we’ve tried pretty much every possible medication available to help him with his allergies. We’ve had some luck with them, but nothing consistent. Since we received a few comments on our Instagram post, I thought I’d share them with you here while Norman continues to nap…

DIY Remedies

Canine Honey

One of the responses was fromĀ K9 Honey, a family owned company that specializes in raw honey made specially for dogs. Just like in humans, regional honey has been shown to improve the effects of allergies in dogs. And it has many other health benefits as well. Just top off their food with a spoon full of their honey. Click on the link to order some for your pup!

Essential Oils

Another response we received was from the Nik Knax company. Their suggestion is a topical solution. Mix a couple tablespoons of almond or coconut oil with 10 drops of lavender essential oil. Rub the mixture directly on to the irritated areas of your dogs skin. They sell the essential oils online, as well as an assortment of other items. https://nikknax.com.

All Natural Supplements

K9 Nature Supplements is a company based in Pennsylvania that focuses on natural and holistic remedies for dogs. If you visit their website, you can find their All Clear Allergy Supplement, which is a chewable blend of herbs that helps relief the symptoms of seasonal allergies. We have not tried this yet, but I’m thinking about ordering some. And it ships FREE anywhere in the United States!

Oatmeal

This one is probably the most well known of the home remedies for itchy dogs, but it’s worth mentioning. Many of you have probably tried an oatmeal shampoo formula of some kind. You can also just use finely ground oatmeal and add directly to your dog’s bath. Either buy baby oatmeal cereal or just grind up the oats yourself in a food processor. Hopefully it will provide them with immediate itch relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar

I also mentioned some of the benefits of apple cider vinegar in a previous blog post. You can read about it here. But one of the benefits is reducing itchiness in dogs. You can give it orally or topically, but be sure to dilute it if given orally.
