Thundershirt for dogs

I’m sure you’ve heard about the Thundershirt for dogs with anxiety. They help keep the dog calm by applying a light but constant pressure while they are wearing it. It’s a similar feeling to when you were a kid and got tucked into bed really tight. Remember that? I really have never thought about getting one for Norman because he’s never really been anxious. But I started to wonder if it might help him a bit. He does get very jittery when he starts to get itchy and he can hardly sit still. If he was wearing one of these shirts, I wonder if he would be less prone to licking or scratching himself as much.

Thundershirts Help with Skin Issues?

I just bought my wife a weighted blanket for Valentine’s Day (spoiler alert, she’s already opened it) and she absolutely loves it. She doesn’t really have anxiety either, but sometimes she has a little trouble sleeping. So far, it’s worked quite well. I’d be interested to know if anyone out there has used the Thundershirt for dogs with skin issues that itch constantly. Or maybe even a small weighted blanket that they make for kids.

While the original idea for the shirts was to reduce anxiety, there seems to be a variety of uses. These include:

  • Reducing fear from loud noises like fireworks or thunder.
  • Help calm overactive dogs.
  • Provide calming effect for dogs in an unfamiliar environment or during travel.

Just by reading some of the reviews, the shirts are pretty popular. And most customers seems to be very happy with it. There’s a lot of comments about the solid construction of the shirts and that most dogs become accustomed to them quickly. I’m still not sure how long it is recommended to leave on your dog. I’ve seen some people talk about leaving it on all night while they sleep, yet the company’s website suggests only a couple hours at a time.

The good thing is that the Thundershirt is really not that expensive. It’s about $30-$40 depending on the size you need. There are also some other options for anxiety shirts for dogs on Amazon. Click that link if you want to check them out. I haven’t done extensive research on them but there are plenty that have pretty positive reviews.

Whichever one you choose, I think it might be worth a try and I’d like to hear from anyone who has tried it. Please feel free to send a message to Norman on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter if you have any thoughts on this shirt.

We work with Rescue dogs and have seen many different situations and dogs. The biggest issue I see is when the “compression” shirt does not fit properly. The pressure is not applied and therefore is not as effective as it could be. I know dogs that look for their shirts, similar to their leash, because they associate good things, positive feelings and comfort. It’s always important to properly associate the tools you use to modify behaviour in a positive way. So short answer is yes, they can be very helpful.
